I have a bunch of links for you this morning, but before you read them I want you to do something for me.

Search your site to see if you have any links to a site called Vidme. If you find those links, remove them.

The reason I ask you to do this is that Vidme was a short-lived Youtube competitor which was zombified earlier this year when this defunct video hosting service’s domain was bought by a porn site. The new owner is using the Vidme videos embedded on other sites to display porn where you least expect it. As Vice reported this week, for a few days there you could find porn on sites such as Huffington Post and the New Yorker Magazine.

Vidme was never a huge video hosting service, but there is always a chance that you might have one of their videos embedded on your site, and it can’t hurt to check.

Here are a few stories to read this Sunday morning.

  • Here’s a long list of rules to ignore on how to use the period
  • Can someone organize an intervention for this book hoarder
  • As you can see from the Vidme incident, the internet is rotting
  • Publishers Weekly has come up with the brilliant idea that you should build your publishing business by going after low-profit markets (discount retailers).
  • Here’s how you can find audiobooks without going through Amazon
  • Kris Rusch digs into how anti-vax idiocy is going to screw up workshops, conferences, and other public events.
  • The reading platform Epic has been acquired by an Indian tech company.
  • There’s a new survey which says readers prefer paper books over digital.  When I read news like that, I am reminded of my mother. She prefers paper but she only reads ebooks because paper books are so bloody inconvenient in comparison. (So let’s not start that “death of ebooks” crap again, please.)
  • Oh, and one of the fundamental problems with surveys like that is that its blinkered focus on books as the only type of content that matters completely overlooks the fact that digital _content_ has largely replaced physical media in a lot of market segments.
