Here are a few stories to read this Monday morning.

  • One thing that some are missing in the furor over Prosecraft is that it was very likely using works legally.  The tl;dr version is that the app did not create a competing work or reduce the value of a work, so its used of a work for analysis was legal.
  • Speaking of Prosecraft, Wired has much more even-handed coverage.
  • Microsoft’s AI-plagiarized travel guide recommended visiting an Ottawa food bank.
  • I have been saying since just after the Internet Archive piracy lawsuit was filed that the IA had an ulterior motive: they wanted to rewrite copyright law. Now that we have the judge’s ruling, I think they may have “lost” the case but still got what they wanted.
  • Amazon is now using AI-plagiarized review summaries for product listings on its site.
  • A judge just issued a ruling which re-iterated the USA Copyright Office’s decision that AI-generated works are not copyrightable.
