Here are a few stories to read this Monday morning.

  • I wish I could visit the town in northern NY state which has 7 bookstores for 400 residents. The closest I have in my area is Charlottesville, which has 5 bookstores in a 2-block radius of downtown.
  • The Internet Archive was hit with another setback in its ongoing attempt to rewrite copyright law.
  • And no, the IA was not interested in helping students at the start of the pandemic; if they were then they would have found a few internet oligarchs to put up $50 million in funding to pay creators. They didn’t because they wanted the lawsuit.
  • The NaNoWriMo organization took money from an AI startup, came out in support of AI, and turned themselves into a pariah. It is amazing how they managed to destroy 25 years of hard work and goodwill in a matter of days.
  • Ted Chiang questions whether AI will ever make art.
